The worst forest fires Europe had seen in a decade swept through southern Poland in the fall of 1992, searing more than 9,000 hectares of forest surrounding Kuznia Racaborska. What was left for the firefighters after the flames subsided was to extinguish the white-hot coals that were burning more than a meter under the surface to prevent the fires from flaring up again.
