Occupy Oakland: General Strike

Thousands heed call for general strike Nov. 2nd

It was a day to be remembered. More than than 10,000 people, with some estimates as high as 100,000, packed the streets of downtown Oakland in response to the Occupy movement's call for a general strike to shut the city down. Many union members and city workers joined the protest, which at times, took on the air of a street carnival. Staging from the Frank H Ogawa Plaza/Oscar Grant Park at the intersection of 14th and Broadway, protesters set out in large groups canvassing the downtown to march on banks and shut them down. Although mostly peaceful, a small number of protesters within the group smashed bank branch windows, ATMs and spray painted graffiti across the entrances.

Later in the day the thousands formed a procession nearly a mile long, with some boarding busses, heading for the Port of Oakland to shut it down before the longshoreman's 7 p.m. shift change. The marchers reached the port and brought all trucking in and out to a standstill, effectively shutting the port down. Protesters returned to Frank H Ogawa Plaza/Oscar Grant Park downtown, after receiving news from the longshoreman's arbitrator that union workers would not be coming into work for the night shift.

Back at the plaza, protesters organized and took over a vacant building a couple of blocks away from their camp. The building used to be a nonprofit community outreach center but had since gone out of business, with the bank foreclosing on the property. With rumors of the Oakland police closing in, protesters barricaded the end of the street in an attempt to hold them off. With lines of police advancing, some protesters lit the barricades on fire. The police quickly moved in, firing teargas and projectiles to force the group away. After, protesters held about a five hour stand-off with police who fired volleys of tear gas and non-lethal projectiles at them. Some protesters picked up the tear gas grenades, lobbing them back at the police, while a few tossed rocks at them. As of 3:30 a.m., when I left the scene, a small group of protesters were still holding the street.
