The Necessity of Hemodialysis and the Art of Making Photos.

Back in April 2009, I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to be invited into Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit to develop a program utilizing photography for children undergoing hemodialysis. Unsure at first in what direction to take the program, its aim would ultimately have to facilitate improved communication between patients, families and health care professionals by illustrating the "whole life" of the child, both in and out of clinical settings.

A week or so before I got the call to start working on the project at CHM, I had watched Zana Briski's "Born into Brothels" documentary and was inspired. I decided to take her approach and give the children at CHM cameras, as she had done with the children in Calcutta, India. So in April 2009, all of the 14 children undergoing hemodialysis treatments at CHM (ages 6-17) were given 35mm point-and-shoot cameras. They were asked to take photos of what interested them at home, school and in the hospital but most importantly, to tell the story of their life using photographs.

Thanks to the wonderful image-making, creativity and perseverance of these children, this remarkable program has taken shape. The Imagine Photo Club has been meeting for nearly 2 years in the Hemodialysis Suite at CHM and the work has been well received. Some children have won awards for their photography, and Dr. Rudolph Valentini, Director of Dialysis Services and Vice Chief of Staff at CHM, likens the insight gained from these images to a "virtual home visit". During dialysis the patient's blood is taken from their body and routed into a dialyzer where it comes in contact with a special solution called dialysate. The dialyzer is made up of many fibers, which work as a filter. These fibers serve as a semipermeable membrane. The dialysate solution moves upward on the outside of the fibers and the blood flows downward on the inside of the fibers. This motion is what pulls waste products across the membrane and cleans the blood. The blood is then returned to the patient and the waste is disposed of.
