Christmas Carp

PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Vendors kill and clean carp as customers wait to purchase this traditional Czech Christmas dish. During the weeks leading up to the Christmas holiday, huge tanks with live carp can be found in every open-air market and on almost every street corner. The carp is often bought live, taken home and put in a tub of water to keep it alive until Christmas Eve when it is then killed, fried and served with potato salad.
