OPOCNO, Czech Republic – It was October 1994 and the annual International Falconry Competition was again taking place in this historic small town. I was fortunate to be able photograph this beautiful and ancient form of hunting for the English-language newspaper Prognosis. Along with the paper’s reporter and translator, I walked kilometers through open fields and brush with falconers from across Europe who traveled to take part in this competition. View the gallery here.

BP was just getting their Vessels of Opportunity program organized to employ local fisherman to assist in the cleanup. Captains and deckhands were lining up at BP claim centers to file for lost wages, as their fishing areas were closed because of the spill. The Second Harvest Food Bank in New Orleans was on the ground providing food assistance to families affected by the spill, while local 8th graders helped sort food at their facility into boxes headed for distribution centers. Even Slewfoot, street musician and 30-year resident of New Orleans, pitched in by donating proceeds from his CD recordings sold on the streets to the Red Cross to help the fishermen who lost their livelihood.

And the oil continues to spill into the Gulf…
