PRAGUE, Czech Republic – It was pure happenstance that I ended up shooting the WUCC here this week and I am sure glad – what a cool and inspiring sport. For the next week I will be following the Mental Toss Flycoons, the third-seeded Ultimate team from Montana, as they make their way through the tournament and into the finals.

Strongman Competition

KUTNA HORA, Czech Republic – Participants in the Czech Republic Strongman competition demonstrate their strength during a competition in the Sedlec district by pulling semi trucks and lifting weights. Next to the site where the oldest monastery of the Cistercians in Bohemia was established in Sedlec in 1142, each of the participants pulled a semi truck 20m and competed in a timed weight lifting contest. International Falconry Competition

OPOCNO, Czech Republic – It was October 1994 and the annual International Falconry Competition was again taking place in this historic small town. I was fortunate to be able photograph this beautiful and ancient form of hunting for the English-language newspaper Prognosis. Along with the paper’s reporter and translator, I walked kilometers through open fields and brush with falconers from across Europe who traveled to take part in this competition. BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico

I drove down to Saint Bernard, Louisiana from Detroit the third week of the spill. BP was just getting their Vessels of Opportunity program organized to employ local fisherman to assist in the cleanup. Captains and deckhands were lining up at BP claim centers to file for lost wages, as their fishing areas were closed because of the spill. The Second Harvest Food Bank in New Orleans was on the ground providing food assistance to families affected by the spill, while local 8th graders helped sort food at their facility into boxes headed for distribution centers. Even Slewfoot, street musician and 30-year resident of New Orleans, pitched in by donating proceeds from his CD recordings sold on the streets to the Red Cross to help the fishermen who lost their livelihood.

And the oil continues to spill into the Gulf…
